Canaan Fir or balsam fir is a North American fir, native to most of eastern and central Canada (Newfoundland west to central Alberta) and the northeastern United States (Minnesota east to Maine, and south in the Appalachian Mountains to West Virginia).

It is celebrated for its rich green needles, natural conical shape, and needle retention after being cut, and it is notably the most fragrant of all Christmas tree varieties.

The Canaan fir is quickly becoming the most premium species of the cut Christmas tree market. The Canaan has many desirable characteristics, especially its amazing needle retention; it’s colloquially referred to as a “no shed” tree. The Canaan fir is also characterized by heavy density, with rich colors of platinum silver and deep bluish green.

Mattern’s Pine Ridge Nursery specializes in Canaan Fir on our Lafayette, Indiana tree farm. Find all of your Christmas Tree and decoration needs here.
